Passport services: Online payment to be mandatory by March - 2013.

Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi, Joint Secretary Passport Seva Project and Chief Passport Officer said around 25-30 per cent of the applicants who get an appointment do not turn up at the respective offices.

The government to introduce online payment to prevent malpractices in obtaining appointments for passport services,  is likely to take effect by March - 2013, the payment could be made through different channels, including debit and credit cards.

However, once the online payment is made, the date and time will be reserved for the person concerned. “Instead of you waiting for us, we will wait for you to come. We will also have an idea before hand as to who the person is,” he said.

The online payment fee is the same as that charged for the the present offline mode, he said.

Ravi Viswanathan, Head of operations, TCS Chennai, said enough security measures are in place for online application of passports to prevent malpractices and this included keeping a tab on IP address from where a particular submission would be made.

The Government’s Passport Seva Project in partnership with TCS will be on till 2018 before further extension for two years with mutual consent, Muktesh Kumar Pardeshi, Chief Passport Officer said.
